As experienced international tax recruiters we have seen hundreds of CVs over the years - it’s a powerful tool to demonstrate your value, vision, and measurable impact. However, we often get asked by even the most senior candidates how theirs can be improved.
So we thought we’d share some of the common CV mistakes we see - and how to avoid them:
1. Listing Duties Instead of Achievements:
Your CV should reflect your strategic impact and how you add value, not just your responsibilities. Focus on high-level achievements like major project outcomes.
2. Not Tailoring to the Role:
Each leadership role has unique requirements. Customise your CV to the industry, focusing on skills and expertise that align with the target organisation’s strategic goals.
3. Too Much Information:
With years of experience, it’s easy to include too much detail. Keep the focus on recent, relevant roles and emphasise high-impact positions.
4. Lack of Measurable Results:
Metrics resonate. Include quantifiable results and operational enhancements to demonstrate your tangible value.
5. Forgetting Soft Skills:
Skills like communication, stakeholder management, and cultural leadership are essential for senior roles. Emphasise these alongside your strategic accomplishments.
6. No Executive Summary:
Start with a concise summary that highlights your career vision, leadership style, and core competencies. This sets the tone and provides hiring managers with a snapshot of your value.
Your CV is your first impression, and the first step in any recruitment process, so make sure it gets you noticed for all the right reasons!
